GENERAL Questions
Where should I park?
Please park either in the Founders Lot, located west of the Stadium off Providence Road, or in the Hearnes Center parking lot directly across from the east side gates.
When is the Climb?
The 2023 Climb will take place on Saturday, May 6th at 8:00 AM.
How long does it last?
The opening ceremony will start at 8:00am and last 30 minutes, followed by the bagpipers leading climbers into the stairways to begin the Climb. We anticipate the whole Climb lasting approximately 3.5 hours.
Will there be a climb in inclement weather?
In the event of inclement weather the Climb will be held across the street in the Hearnes Center.
PARTICIPANT Questions
How many climbers do you allow to participate?
We only allow 422 climbers to participate, each climber is responsible for carrying one of the first responders that perished on 9/11. Registration opens on 1/30/23. Once registration is full, the Stair Climb Committee will select post-9/11 deaths and local LODDs to add to ensure each climber carries a single first responder.
Do I have to be Fire/LEO/EMS to Participate?
NO. This event is open to the public. When registering please select the first responder you would like to climb for. (Fire/LEO/EMS)
How old do I have to be?
You must either be 18-years-old or have written parent permission to participate. If you are a cadet you may climb or request to volunteer at the event.
Can my agency pay for my spot?
You may have your fire department pay for you to participate. We recommend that you sign up and then get reimbursed by your agency. Businesses can also sponsor a team of employees to climb.
Can I substitute for another climber?
We do not allow substitutions. All signups are a non-refundable donation to the Columbia Memorial Stair Climb.
Is this a timed race?
No, this is a memorial event to honor the 422 responders killed on 9-11-2001. We ask that you DO NOT RUN. Passing at designated points is permitted.
What should I wear to climb?
It is recommended to wear breathable clothing and comfortable shoes. All participants are welcome to wear their turnout gear or uniforms at their discretion. SCBAs and other tools are allowed, but not required. Weighed vests are also allowed.
VOLUNTEER Questions
What is required of me?
We ask that you commit to helping with setup and break down on May 6th. Volunteers also MUST attend the pre-Climb meeting to receive volunteer packets and T-shirts. Date of meeting TBA.
Is there a Volunteer Sign-up Deadline?
Yes. Please sign up no later then 03/31/2023. This will allow time for T-shirt orders and training. Please sign-up using the "Register" tab and select "Volunteer".
What will be I be doing?
Each volunteer will be asked to do various things including:
Pass out water and snacks to participants
Help with setup and break down
Pass out ceremony flyers
Help with accountability board
Help with participant safety
Show participants the climb route
Clean up stairways
Lift boxes not exceeding 50lbs
Hang photos of Fallen Responders
ETC...

Breakfast and lunch
Name badge with lanyard
Overwhelming joy and sense of pride
