Bryant's Story

Bryant Edwin Gladney was a devoted public servant, educator, and family man whose life was tragically cut short in the line of duty on December 22, 2021. Born on September 11, 1963, in Tucson, Arizona, he grew up in Centralia, Missouri, where he graduated from Centralia High School in 1981.

A Lifelong Commitment to Emergency Services
Bryant's career in emergency services began in 1986 when he joined the Boone County Fire Protection District as a firefighter at Station 1. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1994. In 2011, he became the EMS Education Program Manager, establishing one of Missouri's most respected EMS education programs. His dedication to training and leadership led to his promotion to captain in 2015 and subsequently to assistant chief in 2020, overseeing the district's Training Bureau. He also served as a duty chief and was instrumental in founding Missouri Task Force 1, a FEMA urban search and rescue team, deploying to major disasters including the aftermath of 9/11.

Educator and Mentor
Beyond his administrative roles, Bryant was passionate about education. He taught EMT and paramedic courses, founded an EMT class for high school students at the Columbia Area Career Center, and mentored countless emergency responders across Missouri. His students, many of whom now serve in various EMS and fire agencies nationwide, remember him as a challenging yet supportive instructor who emphasized compassion and professionalism.

Family and Community
Bryant was a devoted husband to Jamie and father to two sons, Shaun and Jack. He coached his sons' baseball and basketball teams and was a diehard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. His family recalls his unwavering support, sense of humor, and the life lessons he imparted. His older son, Shaun, followed in his footsteps to become a firefighter/paramedic.

Tragic Loss and Lasting Legacy
On December 22, 2021, while responding to a vehicle accident on Interstate 70, Bryant positioned his vehicle to protect the scene. A semi-truck struck his vehicle, leading to his untimely death. His passing marked the first line-of-duty death in the history of the Boone County Fire Protection District.

In honor of his legacy, the Bryant Gladney Foundation was established to provide scholarships to aspiring paramedics, ensuring that his commitment to education and service continues to inspire future generations.

Bryant's life exemplified dedication, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His contributions to emergency services and his community continue to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
